Why I Loved #KimNoFilter

Thursday 23 July 2015

Kim Kardashian a name we all know and all love to hate or hate to love. Known primarily for presenting her life to us on TV and did someone mention a sex tape? I’ve always thought it interesting that on Keeping up With the Kardashians Kim doesn’t come across as the larger than life brunette Barbie doll who takes herself nearly as seriously as Kanye that the media portray. Okay maybe she can be a slight drama queen and she has a ‘Glam Squad’ and naming her child North West didn’t exactly help her on how seriously she brands herself. Nevertheless I genuinely believe she gets a lot of stick in the press unnecessarily and she still wanders around in her pyjamas with no make-up on like we all do and that is why her recent shoot with Vogue Spain was actually pretty genius.

Think of all the magazine covers you’ve ever seen of Kardashian, of all the paparazzi photos even. She’s styled and made up within an inch of her walk in wardrobe. Of course there is debate as to whether #KimNoMakeup is a hundred per cent true. Mario Dedivanovic, responsible for many of Kardashian’s glam faces posted photos of the shoot with the hashtags; #MakeupByMario and #NoMakeupByMario. Naturally this has sparked many to question whether Kim really did bare all, however, Dedivanovic claims to have only used lip balm, moisturiser and eyelash curlers for Kardashian’s look. He also told his Instagram followers that this was his favourite shoot to do with Kardashian as this is how he sees her as ‘very calm, collected and peaceful’ and I don’t find that hard to believe when I see these photos. Kardashian is pregnant and was apparently jet-lagged on shoot with no direction from photographer, Theo Wenner. Kardashian was photographed at her favourite hotel, The Beverly Hills Hotel in simple outfits, the most memorable being a set of blue cotton pyjamas. A photoshoot is a presentation of ideas and personality. This was Kim not being told who to be but simply being.

Okay this was a Vogue cover shoot and we should take it with a pinch of salt. But however much you believe #NoFilterKim I think the idea works. It’s so easy to believe everything we see and read in the media. Kardashian is always playing someone and whilst in some ways here she still is I think it’s the most natural we have ever seen Kardashian and this is what she chose to show us. The photographs are honest and beautiful. Whilst the honesty may be questioned, is this what we were supposed to think? Is it another clever publicity stunt? It’s a new perspective and I for one loved it. Maybe we should stop questioning why Kardashian does everything she does and just appreciate it as an interesting and inspired cover shoot. What did you all think?
